November Is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month: Join the Movement to End This Deadly Disease

Comments : Off

Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest of all cancers. It responds poorly to treatment and spreads quickly to surrounding organs.

When it comes to pancreatic cancer:

  • It is the 7th most common cause of death worldwide.
  • It is the 4th leading cause of death in the United States.
  • It has a 5-year survival rate for all stages combined of a very low 6%.
  • 338,000 new cases were diagnosed worldwide in 2012.
  • 44,000 new cases will be diagnosed in the United States this year.

A major reason why pancreatic cancer is a leading cause of death is that it is seldom detected in its early stages. Tumors can rarely be felt because the pancreas is located deep in the abdomen, between the stomach and the spine. Most signs and symptoms of pancreatic cancer do not occur until the tumor has grown large enough to interfere with the function of the pancreas or of nearby organs such as the liver, stomach, or gallbladder.
When it comes to pancreatic cancer:

  • Few defined risk factors have been identified.
  • Symptoms may be vague and easily confused with those of other diseases.
  • No reliable screening test exists.
  • No early detection method exists.
  • Few effective treatment options exist.
  • No cure has been found.

This November, get involved in the effort to increase public awareness about pancreatic cancer and support research to help end this deadly disease.
