Connexion Healthcare’s Oncology Center of Excellence proudly attended a sneak preview and panel discussion of Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies at the Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club. The event was sponsored by CancerHawk, the National Foundation for Cancer Research (NFCR), Kaiser Permanente, and WETA TV 26. Serving as panelists were Sujuan Ba, PhD, President and COO of NFCR; Daniel Brat, MD, PhD, Diagnostic Neuropathologist and Brain Tumor Researcher at the Winship Cancer Institute in Atlanta, and Director, Cancer Tissue and Pathology Care; Leon Hwang, MD, Oncology Service Chief of Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic and Community Oncologist; and David Sidransky, Director of Head & Neck Cancer Research at Johns Hopkins and Co-founder of Champions Oncology. The panel entertained questions from patient advocates, caregivers, and industry professionals and discussed recent advances in cancer treatment. “Advancements in immunotherapy and how they will continue to impact cancer treatment are tremendously exciting,” said Susan Stein, MPH, CEO and President of Connexion Healthcare.
The film, presented in 3 parts over 6 hours, is based on the 2010 Pulitzer Prize–winning book The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer, by Siddhartha Mukherjee, MD. The production and dissemination of the film were supported by advocacy groups, research organizations, public broadcasters, entertainment industry charities, production companies, insurance companies, healthcare providers, and pharmaceutical companies. Ken Burns, a WETA collaborator, executive produced and served as consultant for the film, while Barak Goodman was its producer and director. The cast includes Oscar-nominated Terrence Howard of Empire fame.
The Emperor of All Maladies covers the history of cancer, recent advances in cancer treatment, and evocative stories of modern patients. By offering a different view of the disease, the film attempts to remove some of the misunderstandings surrounding cancer. A companion radio series will be broadcast nationally on NPR, and a curriculum developed by WETA will be shared, also nationally, with teachers.
